Banff and Buchan MP holds discussions with lead developer of Acorn Project
David Duguid has held discussions with the lead developer of the Acorn Project who remain hopeful of becoming fully operational by 2026.
The Conservative MP for Banff and Buchan met Storegga’s chief financial officer, Brandon Rennet, who told Mr Duguid of his aim for the St Fergus site to be functional in five years.
Mr Duguid said he was determined to work with Acorn and the UK Government to ensure the project is provided with the appropriate support in its designation as reserve site in the first track.
David Duguid MP said: “The meeting I held with Storegga was very positive and constructive.
“I will continue to support and liaise with the Acorn Project during this journey while remaining in constant dialogue with the UK Government.
“I made it clear that Acorn is a key player in the UK’s ambition to capture and store 20 to 30Mt of CO2 using CCS by the end of the decade.
“The UK Government has invested £31 million in the project and will continue to engage with Acorn to support ongoing development and planning as the reserve cluster.
“But that doesn’t mean it has to take this long – Storegga themselves still project Acorn to be operational by 2026 and I fully support that.”
In a statement, Storegga said: “We have been very clear that all of the current clusters need to be operating to meet UK net zero targets and will be seeking support to progress as soon as possible.
“The Scottish Cluster has been selected as a reserve project and we will continue engaging with the government to progress its development and planning.
“The Acorn project will play a significant role in achieving UK Net Zero and will be developed.”
