Captain says cup winners Buckie have come a long way in five years

By Will Clark

CAPTAIN Gemma Geddes says Buckie have come a long way in five years after being crowned Highlands and Islands League Cup winners.

She guided her team to success after beating Sutherland 3–1 on penalties after the teams were locked at 2-2 after extra time in the final to win the club's first ever trophy.

Having been with the club almost since it was first established, Geddes says the club had to go through some hard times and results on the pitch.

It makes her and her teammates appreciate the significance of creating history at Station Park on Sunday afternoon.

"It means an awful lot to us as we have worked hard from humble beginnings five years ago," she said.

"We have come a long way and worked hard and it means everything to us.

"We used to get beat quite a lot, but we have come a long way and i'm glad we have won."

The trophy symbolises how Buckie have become the top team in the Highlands and Islands League this season.

As well as winning the cup on Sunday afternoon, Buckie are top of the league having won all eight matches so far and are five points clear of second place Sutherland.

Geddes says their success this season is down to the dedication of the squad as they look to get the best out of each other.

"I think it is just hard work," she said.

"We are training hard, we are dedicated and we take each game seriously and it is paying off."

Geddes was full of praise for their opponents Sutherland, who did dominate possession for large period of the match.

But she said Buckie had enough to cope with the challenge they presented and deserved to come out on top.

"It was a really tough game as they battled so hard.

"They had a lot of chances, but we managed to pull it through in the end."

Buckie scored all three of their penalties with Kayleigh Stalker, Alena Gardiner and Lori Lappin finding the net.

Sophia Golebiewski also saved Sutherland's second penalty before they missed their next two spot-kicks to give Buckie victory.

Geddes says the composure her team-mates showed from the spot was huge credit to them that they could handle the big occasion.

She says it showed they were determined they were not prepared to head back to Buckie without the trophy.

Speaking about the shoot-out, Geddes said: "It says we really concentrated, we took it seriously and it meant a lot to us.

"We wanted to make sure that we won."
